Charts can be adjustable as to the timeframe they cover. In order to get a full background viewpoint you could look at a weekly chart, which shows the securities closing prices at week end. These weekly charts usually show a history of a year or longer, and are good for getting a perspective of the price history of the security. For day trading purposes you could switch to hourly and fifteen minute charts, to get an up-close look at the movement of the security in a shorter time interval.

Bar charts show the closing, the highest and the lowest price of the session. They also include the volume of the security during that session. Volume is a good indicator when you are looking for support and resistance levels, and breakout activity.
